Math and Art: Do they repel each other?

INSIGHTS GAINED ON MATHEMATICS + ART

PlusQuoter

After going over the class materials for the week, it is quite easy to see that math has had a large effect on art and science. I gained the following insights and have made personal connections to this week’s material.
  • In lecture, R. Buckminster Fuller was quoted saying that each person is born a genius, but the act of living each day de-geniuses them (Vesna). I find it to be true that the separation of art and math is learned. In my own elementary education I was de-geniused with standardized testing.. In return, I was left with the idea that there is a separation of cultures and art was not meant to mix with math.
  • How would someone explain art evolving without factoring math in? Henderson discussed the fourth dimension and its effect on artists (Henderson). This is an interesting point because it shows that art evolves over time as new scientific discoveries are made through time. An example I see in my own life is Origami. In Robert Lang’s Ted Talk, he uses the example of origami to show the intersection of mathematics and art. Origami started as a very simple and elegant work of art by the Japanese. However, through the advancement of mathematics origami became much more complex and people were able to create figures that were once unthinkable (Lang).

  • Albott talks about how the realms of art, mathematics, and science combine to make a society that we all live in today (Albott). The piece gave great examples of it that I did not previously think about. I personally love to go to music festivals and at them I have seen complex art installations. Up until now I viewed them as purely art; however, now I see that they embody art, mathematics, and science to the highest degree. This goes along with Jennifer Ouelette’s idea that, “Fractals may seem haphazard at first glance, yet each one is composed of a single geometric pattern repeated thousands of times” (Ouelette). Art and math are combined all around us, even if we don’t realize it at first.

  1. I really related to the idea that standardized testing is de-genuising students and that the idea that art and math are separate was taught through the process of this testing. I liked how you showed that with time and math, origami was able to evolve from a simple an elegant art form into something very complex. What do you think would be a solution to standardized testing?

  2. I related to Albott talks about combining art, math and science creating our society. Origami does a good job combining these three elements to create a beautiful piece. I also have seen these art pieces and at festivals and have seen them purely as art.
